Flying Over the Severn R.

For the 2003 Elders Trip, group members first flew by chartered Bamadji Air Cessna Caravan aircraft from Ft. Severn to the trip starting point near Weeshinagoo (Beaverstone) on the Atchigo Siipi (Sachigo River). Due to poor weather, it took three days to complete the six flights required to get all people, canoes, food and equipment into the small lake which was the only suitable landing point during this season of extremely low water levels.

With the expert pilotage of Bamadji Air’s Matt Mitchell (originally from Ft. Severn), all flights were relatively incident free considering the poor weather (intermittent snow showers and white-out conditions).

In this video we see river- and land-scapes along portions of the flight. As the video begins, we see some of the smaller channels of the main Washaho Siipi (Severn River) where they split and re-converge amongst the islands of the river delta which stretches for almost 30 kilometres upstream of the community. In the distance we can see snow squalls and the snow-dusted wetlands and small spruce and tamarack stands common to the Hudson Bay Lowlands near the coast.

The smaller, winding river seen next is the Amisko Siipi (Beaver River), an important waterway for local people for travel to access some of the resources the lands provides in the interior of the Lowlands. The Amisko Siipi is also an important travel corridor, with important links to other waterways - the Weeshinagoo Siipi and back south to the Atchigo Siipi, as well as the route to the west to Sturgeon Lake and the village of Shammattawa located at the junction of the God’s River and the Echoing River.

The last, most upstream, of the delta islands is seen next, with a good view of the lone promontory of Chemaun Ministik (Canoe Island). This local landmark was named for the canoe/boat-like profile of the island as seen from the upstream approach after the portage at Wapakwopowastik (the Big Rapids). In the video, the island is embraced by the gravel shorelines and shoals exposed during the low water.

In the last portions of the video, the plane is banking over the Weeshinagoo Siipi near Dirty Knee Rapids, the starting point for the river trip. Persons waiting for others to arrive over the three days of flights were located at a campsite on the edge of a small lake located between the junction of the Weeshinagoo and the Atchigo Siipi.
